Trish's
Thoughts and Favorite Readings
There are scam artists and quacks in ALL professions, but that does
not make ALL psychics scam artists or quacks. An example of a true
psychic is Suzane Northorp, one of five psychics who, when tested
by the University of Arizona, was found to be 80% correct in her
predictions (Fox & Friends 1999). As she points out, when Michael
Jordan is having a good day, he only scored 40% of the time; so why
do people expect psychics’ predictions to be correct 100% of
the time?
I
believe psychics and therapists could benefit greatly
from understanding their counterparts’ roles
and functions. Psychics could learn therapeutic skills
from therapists while therapists could learn to use
their intuition more from psychics.
Webster's
Dictionary (1977)
provides the following definitions:
Psychic – "Lying
outside the sphere of physical science or knowledge:
immaterial, moral, or spiritual in origin or force.
Sensitive to nonphysical or supernatural forces and
influences: marked by extraordinary or mysterious
sensitivity, perception, or understanding.”
Science – "Knowledge
attained through study or practice: something that
may be studied or learned like systematic knowledge.
Knowledge covering general truths or the operation
of general laws especially as obtained and tested
through scientific method (i.e. something measurable).”
Astrology – "The
divination of the supposed influences of the stars
and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events
by their positions and aspects.”
Numerology – "The
study of occult significance of numbers.”
Occult – "Matters
regarded as involving the action or influence of
supernatural agencies or some secret knowledge of
them.”
I
believe the words psychic and intuitive can
be used interchangeably. Each individual has their
own unique way of tuning into their psychic abilities.
Divine Guidance (1998, pp. 25-40) states there are
four forms of being psychic, intuitive or receiving
divine guidance from God:
- clairvoyance – visions, images and mental
pictures,
- clairaudience - sounds, voices and words,
- clairsentience - feelings and hunches, and
- claircognizance - thoughts, ideas, and inner certainty.
How
we perceive everyday information normally offers a
clue as to how we might receive psychic insight. Everyone
experiences instances of divine guidance throughout
their lives, but usually we are unaware of the instances
where we have been guided. However, if asked, most
people could cite a few experiences throughout their
lives where they knew, without a doubt, God guided
them.
According
to Stacey Wolf’s Psychic
Living (1998), we are
all born with psychic energy wired into our brains.
When we tune into that energy, life gets easier and
anything becomes possible. Because we are all psychic,
we already possess the above four forms of being psychic,
just in varying degrees. All can be further developed
with practice. These intuitive talents can provide
guidance in every aspect of our lives.
I
do not believe the use of astrology and numerology
or other metaphysical sciences makes one psychic or
more intuitive. Rather, I believe there are metaphysical
sciences or secret knowledge that can be learned or
memorized.
According
to The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Astrology (1997,
pp. 3-21), astrology was the first science long before
physics, chemistry or biology. As early as 2900 B.C.,
the Sumerians built temples to observe the stars and
planets. In ancient times, astrologers were among the
best-educated people. It was necessary for them to
understand astronomy, math, spiritual symbols and mystic
meanings, psychology and human nature. At one time
all medical doctors were trained in astrology. Indeed,
any doctor who was not a competent astrologer was considered
a charlatan. Astrology was taught in universities until
the 1600’s when “rational science” took
over. Today, most astrologers are still very well educated
and often hold degrees in various fields of study.
They frequently are trained in psychology or counseling,
and in addition to their in-depth knowledge of astrology,
have a great deal of spiritual understanding.
Most
of us like to think that we know better than to believe
in astrology, but much of what we think we know about
astrology is not true at all. For example, astrologers
do not believe that the planets influence human behavior
or cause things to happen. The planets are more like
barometers or indicators of the energies occurring
on earth. This means that what occurs in outer space
is merely a reflection of what is happening on earth.
Some people incorrectly assume that astrology is the
same as fate. Astrology shows potential just as maps
show possible routes. Instead of looking to astrology
for answers, look to it for choices. You provide your
own answers and pick the route you want to take.
Many
people cite the daily horoscopes in newspapers as evidence
that astrology doesn’t work. Astrology is a very
complex mathematical science with logarithms, etc.
To compare the full range of astrology to these daily
horoscopes is like saying one could understand what
chocolate cake tastes like by eating a mouth full of
flour. In terms of method, the difference between newspaper
horoscope and a full professionally done horoscope
is equivalent to using 2% versus 85% of one’s
subject data, and what goes into a method is reflected
in what comes out of it (Signs
of Mental Illness, 1998,
pp. 1-4).
The
problem found in astrology is the abundance of data;
there are over two million different possible basic
aspect calculations (no house cusps, etc.). The skillful
analysis and synthesis of a horoscope is the mark of
a real astrologer. One might use the analogy of a caring
friend lending a shoulder to lean on versus the real
guidance and insight to one’s problems that a
trained therapist can provide. That data continues
to be denied a public hearing is no slur on astrology,
but rather on the critics, who have typically refused
either to study the subject or examine the results
of those who have.
Another
area that gives psychics and astrologers a bad rap
is the onslaught of 900 psychic hot-lines. While these
hot-lines charge about $3 a minute (or $180 an hour);
the so-called psychic is only paid about $15-20 an
hour. There are few tests given, if any, to qualify
these 900 hot-line psychics. As Secrets
of a Telephone Psychic (1998, p. 126) puts it: a switchboard will
determine if you are connected to a flake or a fake.
It
is possible to land a legitimate reader who is gifted
and sensitive to one’s time and money situation,
but the ratio is 65-to-35 with the qualified psychics
falling in the latter category. You are far better
to spend the time obtaining references for reputable
readers. Checking a psychic's references is different
than taking the time to find a qualified therapist
whom you trust and with whom you have a good rapport.
Scientific
Data
In Signs of Mental Illness (1998), psychiatrist Mitchell E. Gibson,
M.D., demonstrates new astrological techniques for predicting mental
illness, based on his study of more than 400 astrological birth
charts and the use of scientific statistical research models. All
the patients depicted in Dr. Gibson’s study were diagnosed
according to the DSM-IV, a standard of psychiatric diagnostic criteria.
The diagnostic groups represented include:
- major depression
- anxiety
- addictive disorder
- schizophrenia
- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
In
Dr. Gibson’s study of addictive disorders, his
control group had less than 3 of 26 possible astrological
planetary markers while his test group had over 6 of
the markers. It would be extremely interesting to take
this study a step further by analyzing sobriety dates
of alcoholics to determine if there is any relevance
to planetary configurations and when it might be more
opportune to start a sobriety program.
As
seen by my weight problem, I have an addictive disorder.
I have at least 7 of these planetary markers and, due
to complex astrological calculations, cannot readily
determine if I have more. From numerology, I learned
about the cycles of starting and finishing and what
period would be “easier” for me to diet
effectively.
Psychic
Readings Complement Traditional Therapy
Intuitive intelligence offers its own brand of knowledge and wisdom,
which can create a perfect complement to one’s rational mind
(The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Being Psychic, 1999, p.236).
Glimpses of the future are not set in stone; they offer a chance
to compare and consider options. It’s human nature to seek
an understanding of God and our future. We each have a role or
holy purpose to fulfill, but one person’s task is never more
important than another person's task (Emissary
of Light, 1996,
p. 124).
Although
it may seem that one job is more essential or pivotal,
the fact is we each have the same ultimate task - to
remember who we are. Many types of psychics are available
who can provide many types of information, which you
can access through various means, such as astrology,
numerology, tarot, etc. You should get in touch with
what you want to know – before you see a psychic… or
a therapist.
Numerology
has been around for 10,000 years pinpointing individual
challenges, areas of growth, and opportunities. Numerology
can give you a plan for overcoming life’s challenges
and realizing/achieving your dreams!
Numerology (1998) states numerology is a science or study of numbers
that is over 10,000 years old and is believed to have
begun its development about the same time as mathematics
(p. 6). Talk therapy has only been around for about
100 years. Blending the ancient wisdom of metaphysical
sciences and the modern expertise of psychology provides
a dynamic, productive way to study and comprehend human
nature.
